Forage cereal benefits
Forage cereal benefits include:
- Flexible sowing times: Forage cereals can be sown at times that may not suit other forage types, such as late summer, late autumn, winter and early spring. This flexibility allows growers to tailor the availability of feed or harvest timing.
- Rapid establishment: Due to their large seed size, cereals can be planted into moisture at depths unsuitable for other seed types. This helps ensure strong germination and establishment, especially in drier climates where their speed to provide valuable feed will be quicker than other options.
- Cost effective: Thanks to the wide range of herbicide and fungicide technology available, weed and disease control is cost effective for forage cereals, making it easier and more cost effective to grow healthy crops for maximum production.
- End use flexibility: Many forage cereals can be used for grazing and/or silage depending on when they were planted and for what purpose. Due to the amount of available feed, stocking rates are often quite high when grazing. These can help build pasture covers on other parts of the farm. Many forage cereals also provide more growth during winter than pastures.
- System fit: Because of their flexible sowing time, forage cereals can provide feed between other cropping rotations. They are also a good fit for developing paddocks as part of a longer term pasture renewal programme.
- High yields: Due to their strong establishment and rapid growth, and following good management with adequate nutrients, forage cereals can provide high volumes of feed whether grazing or cutting.
