Increasing net production per hectare of dry matter is important for Te Kauwhata farmer David Jefferis, and he’s found SF Stellar™ perennial ryegrass to be the best performing product for his type of country.

David, who farms 490 hectares with his wife Lyndi, runs a mixed operation, with dry stock and maize grown and sold on contract.

“We grow maize silage on the best country, about 150ha, during the summer months and during winter we’re finishing up to 10,000 lambs. We farm our own bulls, buying in a bull calf and selling it as a rising two-year-old.”

The majority of the Seed Force™ product used is the SF Stellar™ perennial ryegrass and SF Quest and mainstay white clovers.

“We’re trying to get a medium to long term establishment out of these grasses and clovers as well, to increase our net production per hectare of dry matter. I’ve found that, if established and managed properly in the first 18 months, they’ve been extremely resilient for our soil type and our location. The ongoing pay off by giving them some TLC in the first 18 months is huge. We’re fortunate that we can use sheep to help that process.”

David says they’ve been impressed by its horsepower and ability to keep growing.

The Jefferis also plant between 50-60ha of SF Punter™ chicory in spring each year as a summer crop to farm young cattle on. This year they plan to finish lambs on it as well.
