Colin and Karen Bird

“I use SF Indulgence™ Italian ryegrass to under sow in my weaker paddocks and we get a really good result with that.”

Colin Bird aims to grow as much of his own feed on farm as possible, and he’s looking to Seed Force™ to help provide that feed.

Colin and his wife Karen winter about 650 cows on their 192ha (effective) dairy farm, all grass fed with some palm kernel input.

This year they planted 26ha of SF Punter™ chicory. Their programme is to spray the chicory out and plant oats and SF Sultan™ annual ryegrass for the cows to winter on. That is then sprayed out and put back into chicory. After the second year of chicory the paddock is put back into permanent pasture.

“I stopped using maize because there was too much wastage and we don’t have a pad. I’m trying to grow everything on farm,” Colin says.

This year he also planted SF Stellar™ perennial ryegrass and they have also planted SF Finesse tall fescue for the last three years.

“I use SF Indulgence™ Italian ryegrass to under sow in my weaker paddocks and we get a really good result with that. We get two to three years from it and the farm responds well to it. Every year I plant anything from 30-50ha of SF Indulgence™.”

Colin has used SF Finesse tall fescue in those paddocks on his farm that have previously struggled to keep grass, like those with dry, pumice type soils and also wet areas.

“The cows seem to like the new grasses…the fescue really comes into its own in summer. The last few years the chicory and fescue have been the only green areas and everything else has browned off.”

Colin knows his Seed Force™ Territory Manager Ben Leong is only a phone call away. “Ben’s support is really good. I use Ben for seed but also ask him about things like chemicals for weed spraying – he’s got massive knowledge.
